Retired Empress

Vienna is one of the most beautiful cities not only in Europe, but also in the whole world. Founded about 2,000 years ago, the city, for the most part, appears to us majestic and imperial, with luxurious palaces and cathedrals, spacious avenues and numerous cafes, which, incidentally, are also a local attraction.

In Vienna, more than 80 museums, some of which are located in the museum quarter, are worth visiting the museums of Leopold, Sigmund Freud and modern art. The symbol of the city and its main attraction is St. Stephen’s Cathedral of the 16th century, located in the Old Quarter. Here is one of the largest organs of Europe, the tomb of the Habsburg dynasty, an observation deck, and the height of one of the towers reaches about 136 m.

Among the palace complexes, it is worth noting one of the oldest – Hofbrug, the most beautiful giant Schönbrunn Palace, as well as the Belvedere Palace Baroque Complex, where expositions of one of the galleries are now located. You should definitely visit the famous Vienna Opera, go on an excursion to the Vienna Forest, and visit the Parter amusement park or the chocolate factory with children. To complete the walk around the city stands in one of the traditional cafes, enjoying the unique local coffee and Viennese waffles.

Mozart City

Salzburg is the center of the Austrian land of the same name and is located only 5 km from the border with Germany. This is a cozy town with a rich history, many churches and palaces, there was a summer residence of kings, and the greatest musical genius was born – Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Their famous native is honored here: the square and the University of Music are named after him, there is his museum, located in the house where Mozart was born. In the old quarter of Salzburg, the center is the Residenzplatz Square, where the Old and New residences of the Archbishop, the fountain and the Cathedral, built in the 17th century, as well as the Franciscan Church of the 13th century, are located.

One of the oldest buildings in this area is the Hohensalzburg fortress, erected in the 11th century, only the Benedictine abbey of St. Peter, founded in the 8th century, around which a new settlement began to form, can cope with it. It is also worth noting the most beautiful palaces Mirabel and Helbrunn, built in the 16th century. It is worth visiting the city zoo with children, and the most desperate can be sent on an excursion to the icy caves of Eisrizenvelt, which are the largest such object in the world.

Design, Middle Ages and Nature

Two and a half hours by train from Vienna, and you are in Graz, a city of design, culture and such a well-preserved historical center that it is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Here it is interesting both lovers of history, and those who are attracted by novelty, and adoring active rest. Of course, the Old City with a unique Arsenal – almost the largest collection of ancient weapons in the world – is responsible for antiquities. The city’s slightly puppet medieval architecture includes ultramodern buildings – the alien species Kuntshaus, the space-like bridge and island on the Moore River and the Joanneum museum quarter, harmoniously combining old and new.

The best view of the city opens from Mount Schlossberg, from where it is convenient to go to explore the surroundings. For example, on Mount Shockle, where you can picnic, ride a mountain bike, do paragliding or just walk along picturesque paths. And you can go away and see at first hand the beauty of the local nature. In Lurgroth, you will find the world’s thickest “hanging” stalactite, as well as the Big Dome – an incredible beauty underground hall 120 by 80 and 40 meters high. And in the Barenschutsklamm gorge – an opportunity to walk along the protected areas of the Moore River. It would also be good to go to the Austrian capital of flowers, the postcard town of Fronleiten, and to the village of Tal, the birthplace of Arnold Schwarzenegger and an impressive church. In Thale, there are all opportunities for both winter (skiing, skating) and summer sports (boat, swimming, running).

A hundred years after the death of the great composer, one Smeckalist Austrian suggested that on the name of a famous person you can make good money. Later, this approach will be called branding, and then candy was born, which is now known throughout the world. Their main feature is the filling of marzipan. Estonians are actively defending the idea of inventing marzipan. We do not know if this is true, but the fact that in Austria it is used wisely is a fact. We recommend buying candy not in the airport store or at tourist bazaars, which are enough in Austria, but in chain supermarkets such as Spar. Then the cost of sweets will be from 4 to 10 euros. By the way, a literal translation of the name “Mozart ball.” In addition to these sweets, you can also recommend the Sacher cake, which is very common with us.

Austria has its own tradition of making hot drinks. What to recommend? Look for yourself. Local beer is tastier and more diverse than in Germany, but it is not very convenient to carry. Schnaps – as in Germany, are made from fruits (most often apples) and berries, but not everyone will appreciate it. Therefore, we advise you to continue to get acquainted with Mozart products – chocolate liquors. In total, there are 3 types of such liquor: “Mozart Original Chocolate” – milk chocolate liquor; “Mozart White Chocolate” – white chocolate liquor; “Mozart Black Chocolate” is made of black chocolate. We recommend taking the latter, since it has the best taste, in comparison with creamy chocolate analogues. You can and should buy in a regular supermarket.

The well-known brand is Austrian, and its main production is in the city of Innsbruck (where the Olympics-72 took place and where night trains run). Do not be afraid of prices, thinking that this is a souvenir that very wealthy people can afford. Of course, the gift is not cheap, but you can still find items with famous crystals cheaper than 100 euros. By the way, Swarovski, sorry for transliteration, can be inlaid into anything – jewelry, pens, flash drives, etc. It is best to purchase such a souvenir either at the Swarovski Museum in Innsbruck, or at branded stores in Vienna. What the products of this company know everyone, admire their museum-store!

Perhaps there is no person in the world who would not hear about Viennese waltzes and Viennese coffee. Thousands of coffee shops and shops offer the tourist to get to know this fragrant drink. There are a huge amount of coffee! It is best to try (and buy home) espresso Kleiner Schwarzer and dark Kapuziner. In addition, we recommend taking Fiaker mocco, which is usually drunk with rum or cognac. Recommending a coffee shop is a dead thing, someone will always say that this is much better. Focus on three criteria: reviews, the number of famous personalities who visited the coffee shop earlier (and do not say that you would not like to drink coffee where Karl Marx wrote “Capital,” and Mozart – another symphony), and, finally, the coffee shop belongs to the famous confectionery.

Pumpkin oil is not the souvenir you will find in Vienna or Salzburg. To get it, you need to go to rural Austria. Here you can get it at one of the farms. In fact, this is a kind of brand of the Austrian province. It can be used both for preparing sauces and as a cosmetic. Enjoy this souvenir of fashionistas and cooks.

Among other things, the capital of the empire was famous for its porcelain. Figurines, coffee sets, lamps are only a small list of what is made on the territory of the Augarten Palace. Of course, such a souvenir is not the most durable, so you need to carry it carefully. But if you decide, know – it is likely that your grandchildren will play with these cute, but very beautiful trinkets. And a coffee set can give a special mood to an exquisite drink. You can also get acquainted with the production process and bring home a mug made with your own hands.
