The history of Copenhagen begins in the 12th century, when a small settlement was located on this place. In 1167, by order of Bishop Absalon, a castle and a fortress were built here, turning the village into a fortified city. At the beginning of the 15 century, the city was captured by the King of Norway Eric III and made Copenhagen his residence. In the history of Copenhagen, there were long wars and sieges that the city heroically withstood, as well as an extensive fire in 1728, which destroyed about a quarter of the city. The first fortress of the city survived, and blocks and buildings begin to grow around. Copenhagen is strengthened by sea forts and is booming. Unknown Europe
The second largest city in Denmark, Aarhus, is a small and large city at the same time. Small because you will have enough time for you to get acquainted with the place in a short time, but big so that you can heartily imbue the lively life of the city and enjoy its events. A mixture of youthful optimism and creativity, together with the city’s good old coziness, create a unique atmosphere and make visiting Aarhus pleasant and invigorating for each guest.
It is worth examining the building of the old Town Hall, built in 1857, and the building of the new Town Hall, built in 1938-1942 according to the project of the famous Danish architect Arne Jacobsen. Notable is the church of Fruckirche (Vor Frue Kirke), built in 1060, which is considered one of the oldest existing stone churches in Scandinavia, and possibly the oldest of them. In addition, the tallest and longest cathedral in Denmark (Aarhus Domkirke), which is already more than 800 years old, is of interest.
There are many interesting museums in Aarhus, for example, this is one of the largest museums in Denmark – the Aarhus State Museum; the city museum, as well as the Viking Museum. Another museum that deserves attention is the Aarhus Art Museum (ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum) – one of the largest in Northern Europe, and the Museum of Women (Kvindemuseet). But the museum “Den Gamle By,” which has collected more than 50 typically “Danish” buildings from different cities built between 1597 and 1909, is a unique open-air museum village with all the necessary infrastructure – restaurants and shops.
You can also relax and enjoy a beautiful landscape in the Botanical Garden, founded in 1875 and located north of the old city. More than a thousand species of plants grow in the garden, tropical greenhouses are also open to visitors, along which organized excursions are held. In short, when good weather in Aarhus is worth walking here one pleasure.
Smørrebrød
The main feature of Danish cuisine, which distinguishes it, is an unusually large variety of sandwiches – smørrebrød. Moreover, Danes consume sandwiches not only as a snack, but also as a separate dish. In Denmark, there are more than two hundred traditional recipes for various sandwiches with the most diverse “filling,” and any of them has its own name!
Rødgrød med fløde
The next Danish national dish that deserves special attention is the rød-grød-me-fløde (rødgrød med fløde). It resembles berry jelly soup made from porridge or cereal, served with an assortment of summer berries, such as raspberries, red currants, or with cream.
Danish buns
For dessert, you must try Danish buns (which the Danes call “Vienna”). By the way, Danish buns from IKEA do not taste different from the “original.”
Glogg
The main Christmas Nordic drink Glogg is something other than port. The difference between Danish gleg and neighboring Swedish and Norwegian in the addition of a large amount of raisins and almonds.
Aquavit
The most popular drink in Denmark and throughout Scandinavia is Aquavit (in its popularity it rivals Swedish vodka Absolut). Translated from Danish, the name of the drink means “water of life.” You bet! 80% alcohol:)
Denmark is the birthplace of the famous LEGO designer. The name comes from two Danish words – “leg godt,” which means “play well.” If you think that such a gift will only appeal to the baby – you are mistaken. The LEGO designer can be a solution to the difficult problem of choosing souvenirs in Denmark. Colorful “bricks” were first released in 1949, since then they have become one of the most popular toys in the world. LEGO produces series of sets on various topics, for example, on the plots of world-famous films such as the Lord of the Rings, Star Wars or Harry Potter, stories about superheroes, secret agents, and most recently a designer based on the computer game Minecraft came out, which will especially please “gamers.” The cost of the gift will depend on the size of the designer; for a large set you will pay about 100 euros, and for LEGO mini-figures – only about 4 euros.
Founded in 1775, Royal Copenhagen is one of the oldest in the country. Today it is a recognizable brand that has a high reputation for the quality of porcelain products, famous for their impeccable design. In the company store you can buy dishes, porcelain interior items, accessories and seasonal jewelry. Perhaps you will be scared off by their cost (for example, small tea services and plates are sold at 80 euros apiece). However, it is worth remembering that Royal Copenhagen supplies its products to the Danish royal family, and, as you know, it is worth paying for quality and prestige. Moreover, the company provides a two-year guarantee and if you accidentally scratch the plate, you will change it for free to a new one. Thus, the gift is undoubtedly expensive, but at the same time worth this money. By the way, the most famous exhibit of the company’s collection – the service of the Flora Danica series was specially made by order of the king as a gift to Empress Catherine II. His objects depicted engravings of the botanical atlas of Denmark of the Enlightenment.
Danish artist Kai Boysen has forever written his name into history, thanks to the creation of famous wooden toys that made him a classic of Danish design. After he finished his studies in Denmark, Boyesen began working as a jeweler, but this did not prevent him from finding free time to experiment with other materials, with one of which – with a tree – his whole life was subsequently connected. He believed that toys should radiate good and warmth, in his homeland he was called “a man who loved to play.” Of course, the most famous creation of Boyesen is considered a wooden monkey. Created back in 1951, it is now one of the most popular child slaughters in Denmark, which it has become customary to inherit. The toy was originally designed for children aged five years, but quickly became popular among adults. In addition to her, there was also a bear and an elephant in the “family.” Since 2011, all Boyesen toys, among which, in addition to the mentioned monkey, elephant and bear, were wooden bunnies, hippos, soldiers, began to be produced by Rosendahl.
Among the most iconic sights of Copenhagen, a special place is occupied by the statue of the Little Mermaid, which has been located along the harbor of Langelinie since the opening of the monument in 1913. Writer Hans Christian Andersen, thanks to his tales, is one of the most recognizable writers in the world. This statue acts as a symbol of his heritage and attracts millions of tourists to the Danish capital who can buy souvenirs and other products depicting the Little Mermaid for themselves. But unfortunately it’s not that simple. It will be possible to say that you are lucky if you find a statuette of the Danish-made Mermaid. But if the inscription on the things “made in Denmark” does not matter to you, you can turn your eyes to trinkets depicting the Little Mermaid and other souvenirs on the theme of Andersen’s tales with the brand “made in China,” which you will find a great many. They cost about ten euros.
Nisse is a fictional character, an element of Scandinavian folklore (mainly Danish and Norwegian), which has been playing the role of a house for almost two hundred years. The history of the appearance of the nysse is connected with farmers who believed that the au pair would be successful only if treated with respect and respect. Since ancient times, the nysse has been a symbol of such a festive event as Christmas. An important attribute of the niche is considered to be a red pointed hat, love for children, animals and pranks, and the main task is to take care of family members and their well-being. Therefore, it is customary to present gifts with his image, they come in all shapes and sizes, the most popular are miniature Christmas tree jewelry, scenery, soft toys and dolls, as well as painted services.
The city of Skagen in northern Denmark is famous primarily for the fact that there are waters of two seas – the North and the Baltic. Due to the fact that the seas differ in both composition and temperature, their waters do not mix, and therefore it is not difficult to see the border of the two seas. But this fact is by no means the main attraction of this spa Danish town. Skagen is known for its sand dunes, as well as rich flora. In addition, it was here that the phenomenon of the “Skagen rose” was discovered more than a hundred years ago. But this is not a flower at all, as you at first could think. This is an abnormal change in willow, which occurs when the tops of shoots under the influence of the Gallic parasite turn into a gall, which is similar in shape to a small rose flower. In spring and summer, the willow rose is green, but in autumn it dries and acquires a golden color. Dried Skagen Rose is popular as a decoration. Also on sale now you can find gold and silver rings, pendants, necklaces, earrings as a souvenir.
